Every year we design the green women's power sock, and this year Claudia from the knitting design team came up with an exciting pattern that is also a lot of fun to knit.

Instructions for the Women's Power Sock 2025

What is sock yarn?

The name already says it: sock yarn is yarn that is perfectly suited to knitting socks and, of course, wearing socks. Sock yarns are specially designed so the socks knitted from them are resilient, abrasion-resistant and long-lasting.
Socks have to withstand quite a lot: they are pulled on and off, stretched, and exposed to constant friction in shoes, especially on the sole, shaft, heel and toe. That is why we have our Gründl Hot Socks range. With our mostly OEKO-TEX certified sock yarns, we place great value on durability, comfort and beautiful colours.

What is the best sock yarn?

Whether sock yarn is good quality is not only noticeable while knitting. Its wearing properties and washability also show how good the yarn really is. Good sock yarn is plied several times, usually 4-ply or 6-ply, and contains polyamide in addition to new wool. The blend of wool and polyamide is unbeatable for socks.
Classic sock yarn usually consists of 75% new wool and 25% polyamide. New wool absorbs moisture, is breathable and helps prevent unpleasant odours. Polyamide makes the knitted fabric dimensionally stable and hard-wearing. Many of our Gründl sock yarns use exactly this composition, from plain yarns to colourful self-patterning qualities.

Which yarn is suitable for socks?

Do you want to knit classic everyday socks? Or cosy socks that are perfect for curling up on the sofa? How about light cotton socks for summer? Depending on the occasion, choosing the right sock yarn matters.
For classic hand-knitted socks that fit into almost any shoe, we recommend 4-ply sock yarn made from new wool with a small amount of polyamide. It keeps you nicely warm without being too bulky, and it is elastic, breathable and abrasion-resistant.
For colder winter months, 6-ply sock yarn is excellent. Its thickness keeps your feet especially warm and makes knitting progress faster. For summer socks, cotton blends are a pleasant choice.

How much yarn do you need for socks?

You have probably often wondered how many balls are needed for socks. Here is the answer: it always depends on the yarn thickness and how many grams a ball contains. For 4-ply sock yarn, 100 g are needed, usually one ball. For 6-ply sock yarn, you need around 150 g, and for 8-ply sock yarn, 150 to 200 g are needed.

Which needles do you need to knit socks?

When knitting socks, the needle size should match the yarn thickness, regardless of the shape or type of knitting needles. As a rule, needle size 2.5 to 3 is ideal for 4-ply sock yarn. For 6-ply sock yarn, we recommend knitting needles with a diameter of 3 to 4 mm. Socks are usually knitted on double-pointed needles, meaning with five needles. Depending on your preference, you can use bamboo, aluminium or plastic needles. In our online shop, they are available in lengths of 15 cm or 20 cm.

Can socks be knitted with circular needles?

In principle, you can knit socks with circular needles. There are special needles with differently long tips and a short cable: mini circular needles made especially for hand-knitted socks. There are also patterns and special techniques that make sock knitting with circular needles possible.
Usually, socks are knitted with double-pointed needles. In our free sock knitting patterns, we use double-pointed needles.
Which needles you choose is entirely up to you. It is a matter of taste whether you prefer double-pointed or circular needles, and the material - wood, metal or plastic - is also your decision.

How many stitches to cast on for socks?

Baby socks, children's socks or adult socks: the question of how many stitches to cast on comes up every time. We have prepared a table where you can see at a glance how many stitches to cast on for each size, how wide the heel should be and how long the foot length should be. All information is based on 4-ply sock yarn. If you prefer to knit with 6-ply sock yarn, here you will find the table for thicker sock yarn.

How do you knit the heel on socks?

From the yo-yo heel to the heel flap and the boomerang heel, there are many ways to knit sock heels. Here we introduce the two best-known variants: the heel with short rows and the heel with heel flap and gusset. We also explain both of these heel instructions in our basic sock pattern. Let's go - all information is based on the example shoe size 42/43, Hot Socks 4-ply.

How do you knit a heel with short rows?

The heel is knitted over the stitches of the 1st and 4th needle, in our example 32 stitches, in stocking stitch rows. Place the stitches on one needle.
Row 1: knit all stitches, turn.
Row 2: work the first stitch as a double stitch: place the yarn in front of the work, insert into the stitch from the right, slip the stitch with the yarn and pull the yarn firmly to the back so the stitch lies double on the needle. Purl the remaining stitches, turn.
Continue working double stitches at the beginning of each row and knit or purl up to the previous double stitch. Repeat until the required heel stitches have been worked. Then continue according to the table and close the heel step by step.

How do you knit a heel with heel flap and gusset?

Knit the heel flap over the stitches of the 4th and 1st needle, in our example 32 stitches, in stocking stitch rows. Place the stitches on one needle and always knit the 2nd and 3rd stitch as well as the second and third last stitch of each row to create ribs. The stitches on the 2nd and 3rd needle remain unworked. After the required number of rows, divide the heel stitches into three parts according to the table. Then the middle section forms the heel flap while the side stitches are gradually worked in. After the heel flap, pick up stitches along the heel wall and continue knitting the gusset decreases until the original stitch count is reached again.

Can socks also be crocheted?

The answer is yes! For everyone who prefers crochet to knitting: hand-crocheted socks also look wonderful, keep feet warm and put them beautifully in the spotlight.
The difference between knitted and crocheted socks is the wearing feel and texture. Because crochet stitches are three-dimensional, crocheted socks are coarser and bulkier. That also makes them perfect for pampering your feet with a little reflexology massage ;)
At Gründl, we prefer the classic knitted version, so our sock patterns are currently available as knitting downloads. Would you like a Gründl crochet sock pattern? Send us an email at briefkasten@gruendl.com with your request.

How do I knit socks correctly?

All socks are knitted correctly! After all, what could be better than individual socks? We can assure you: in knitting, there is no absolute right or wrong. Sock knitting offers countless possibilities.
Let our sock knitting patterns inspire you. More than 40 different sock patterns are waiting for you. If you are a beginner, it is best to start with our basic sock pattern and then work your way step by step towards more unusual designs.
You can also put together your own personal sock: choose your favourite cuff, foot pattern, heel shape and toe. Boomerang heel, heel flap or afterthought heel - there is plenty of room to experiment.

Which sock toes are there?

Wedge toes, star toes, propeller toes, sock toes with short rows and toes closed with duplicate stitch - these are only a few of the countless sock-toe options. If you like something more unusual, there are even sock toes where either only the big toe or all toes are knitted separately. This is exactly why we love knitting socks so much. With these almost endless possibilities, there is surely the perfect toe for every foot shape. Try out which sock finish suits you best and fits most comfortably. Practice makes perfect, and if the first toe is not ideal, you can always unravel and try another shape.

How do you knit the toe on socks?

Just like sock patterns, there are many ways to knit a sock toe. Here we reveal our most popular sock toe and explain step by step how it is knitted.
The classic among sock toes is the wedge toe. This standard toe gets its name from the decreases that run like bands along both sides of the foot. What makes this finish special is its symmetrical shape: wedge toes are very versatile and adapt to different foot shapes.

When do you start the sock toe?

First it is time to knit, knit, knit! Once your sock is long enough to reach your little toe when you try it on during knitting, you can begin the toe. Exact details can of course also be found in our sock patterns and sock tables.
Then you can start the decreases: on the 1st and 3rd needle, knit the second and third last stitches together; on the 2nd and 4th needle, knit the 1st stitch, slip the 2nd stitch knitwise, knit the 3rd stitch and pass the slipped stitch over. Repeat the decreases according to the table. Tada: pull the remaining stitches together firmly with double thread and sew in the ends.

How do I knit felt socks?

Knit, wash, cuddle! Have you ever knitted felt socks or felt slippers? It is very simple, and thanks to thicker felting wool, it is also quite quick. During washing, small irregularities and knitting mistakes even disappear - perfect if you have just started your sock-knitting journey ;)
Basically, you knit felt socks like normal socks. The only difference is the yarn. For felt socks, you need a material that felts in the washing machine. Conventional socks are usually superwash-treated, meaning they do not felt even in the machine. Our Gründl felting wool is ideal for felt socks and slippers. The OEKO-TEX® certified pure new wool yarn is available in many bright colours, including colour gradients.

How do I knit socks as a beginner?

Our Gründl tip for beginners in sock knitting: calm, time and patience. With these three magic words, your first hand-knitted socks are sure to turn out beautifully. If you work through the individual steps of the sock pattern one by one, basically nothing can go wrong. At the beginning, you might also watch one or two YouTube videos so you can pause again and again and copy each stitch.

Is it hard to knit socks?

With a detailed basic knitting pattern for socks, it will surely be easy for you. Tricky patterns, motifs and colour changes come later, once your whole family is supplied with basic socks and you can master the needle technique in your sleep ;)
Our Gründl tip: if you start your first knitting attempts with 6-ply sock yarn, you can enjoy quicker results. Individual stitches are also easier to see.

How do I knit spiral socks?

Spiral socks are also a wonderful knitting project for inexperienced knitters. If the term is new to you: spiral socks are socks without a heel. They are a long knitted tube whose special pattern creates the fit. Because they have no heel, spiral socks often fit several sizes and are great for both children and adults.
For spiral socks, start with a tube in a spiral pattern. Make sure the total number of stitches is divisible by eight. The stitches are distributed over four needles, and the fifth needle is used for knitting. The spiral pattern is created by shifting the rib pattern by one stitch after several rounds. Continue until the sock is long enough, then finish with the toe.

How quickly can you knit socks?

The speed, or the time needed to knit socks, depends on many different factors. Are you already practised at sock knitting? Are you patient? What kind of socks do you want to knit? How long should they be? All these questions give an idea of how long sock knitting will take. Our heartfelt tip: strength lies in calm. The calmer and more relaxed you are while knitting, the faster your socks will be finished. It sounds paradoxical, but it is true: fewer careless mistakes happen and you save yourself from unravelling. In principle, however, you should plan around 15-20 hours for a pair of socks.
