Welcome to the world of amigurumi
Every year we design the green women's power sock, and this year Claudia from the knitting design team came up with an exciting pattern that is also a lot of fun to knit.
Where does the word amigurumi come from?
Once you start, we travel straight to Japan: this is where the word amigurumi comes from. More precisely, the term is made up of the two Japanese verbs amu (編む, German: to knit) and kurumu (包む, German: to wrap, to envelop). So amigurumi roughly means small crocheted or knitted cuddly animals and figures with stuffing.
What do I need for amigurumi?
You will need: crochet yarn, a crochet hook, leftover yarn, embroidery thread, stuffing and anything you can imagine for decorating your little crochet friends. For example, buttons, safety eyes or felt are perfect for this. As always in the wide world of handicrafts, there are no limits to your creativity. You can, of course, buy the crochet yarn you need directly online.
Which yarn for amigurumi?
For crocheted animals, we recommend our yarn Cotton Quick Uni for a slightly glossy look. It is made from 100% mercerized, gassed and combed cotton. This means the yarn is refined in elaborate finishing processes to remove tiny, bothersome hairs and protect it from unpleasant pilling. The material also gains a wonderful shine that makes your crocheted amigurumi really glow. Our yarn is available as 50 gram balls with a length of 125 meters - the ideal amigurumi yarn. Cotton Quick uni is available in 45 different colors, so you can crochet almost any kind of amigurumi. For an animal with a color gradient, such as a unicorn or another fantasy animal, we recommend our Cotton Quick Print yarn with a gradient. Our Cotton Quick Batik yarn with colorful long-repeat print also creates a particularly exciting pattern.
Because skin-friendliness and quality are especially important to us, this yarn is also OEKO-TEX® certified. It is free from pesticides and therefore also ideal as a self-crocheted playmate for babies and children.
Which crochet hook do I need for amigurumi?
The size of the crochet hook depends on the thickness of your yarn. For our cotton yarns Cotton Fun or Cotton Quick , we recommend a crochet hook size of **2.0 - 3.5.** Which type of hook you choose is entirely up to you. In our shop you will find hooks in a wide range of styles: aluminium with rubberized grip, metal with plastic handle, pure metal or plastic. We are sure you will find the right hook for you and your amigurumi.
What stuffing do I need for amigurumi?
Stuffing is the last and perhaps even the most important step toward your wonderful amigurumi. It is what truly brings your amigurumi to life and gives it its sweet shape. Once you have crocheted all the individual pieces, they are filled with stuffing, sewn together, and your individual amigurumi is finished.
How can I decorate my amigurumi?
Once your small, sweet crochet project has been crocheted, stuffed and sewn up, the very last step begins. Your amigurumi still needs a personality. How about beautiful big eyes? A fluffy mane for a lion? A tiny little nose? Something to wear? You decide what character your amigurumi should have. Felt, buttons, yarn scraps or embroidery thread are perfect for decorating. Small details make your crocheted figure truly unique.
Cute amigurumi ideas for gifts and decoration
The world of amigurumi is not only colorful, it also speaks countless shape languages.
Let us start right in the world of amigurumi animals: from small water lovers such as turtles and frogs to cute forest friends, fantasy creatures and cuddly companions, almost anything is possible. With a little yarn, a crochet hook and stuffing, small characters are created that are perfect as gifts, decorations or playmates.
Amigurumi keychains to give as gifts
Another category in the world of amigurumi is crocheted keychains. A little bit of good luck to take with you is always a lovely idea. How about our sweet heart smiley keychains? They are quick to crochet and make small, thoughtful gifts for people you care about.
Crochet pattern for amigurumi flowers
Beautiful, more beautiful, amigurumi flowers: a colorful bouquet of tulips is sure to make anyone happy. Colorful flowers simply lift the mood, don't they? And when the little flowers are crocheted, they never wilt. Amigurumi flowers are perfect as a decoration, a small gift or a cheerful detail on bags and accessories.
We would like to further support this campaign and will therefore donate for every green* sock yarn ordered from the Gründl online shop between February 4th and March 4th, 2025. 100% of the proceeds will go to the German Association for Gynecological Cancers (Verein für Gynäkologische Krebserkrankungen Deutschland e.V.).
