The history of granny squares

Where does the crochet trend with lots of small geometric shapes actually come from? And when was this wonderful technique invented?

Did you know that the Granny Square crochet technique actually grew out of a shortage of wool? In the post-war years of the 1950s and 1960s, yarn and wool were scarce. So every tiny leftover was saved and reused. And a new crochet trend was born: around the late 1960s, the Granny Square emerged. We think that is brilliant. Multicoloured grannies are an effective way to use small amounts of yarn left over from other projects. Sustainable, smart and creative.

How are granny squares crocheted?

Let us start from the beginning: the classic Granny Square is usually a square textile made with crochet. It is worked from the centre outwards, for example with chain stitches and double crochet stitches in rounds. This traditionally handmade crochet element can be made as large as you like. There are also no limits to the number of colours. Most often, however, several small squares are joined together to create colourful accessories or garments. The best-known projects made using the Granny Square technique are probably patchwork blankets, bags and tops.

Of course, the Granny Square has continued to evolve over time. In addition to the basic square shape, crochet products can also be made from other geometric shapes. Whether triangle, pentagon, hexagon or even octagon - one thing is certain: the combination possibilities and your creativity know no bounds.

PS: To make sure joining the individual pieces works beautifully, regardless of the basic shape, we have a small tip for you: if all shapes are the same size, you can crochet them together wonderfully and achieve an even result.

Which yarn is best for granny squares?

Now we know where the crochet trend comes from and how colourful, individual products can be created from it. The only question left is: which materials are best suited for it? We can warmly recommend our cotton yarns. They are not only wonderful to crochet with, but will also impress you with their comfortable feel. Especially in summer, for light and airy crocheted summer clothing, these yarns are a real lucky find, promised. And if you love bold and radiant shades, then there is really nothing more to say: our Cotton Quick uni , Cotton Quick print and Cotton Quick Batik , as well as our Cotton Fun yarns, come in all your favourite colours. Have a look around our shop and grab your favourites.

PS: Of course, the right crochet hooks should not be missing either. Good thing we offer a huge selection. In our shop, you will find the right crochet hook for every crochet project. And once you have all your tools together, you can finally get started with Granny Squares.

What can I make with granny squares?

Of course, we have put together our favourite projects crocheted in Granny Square style in our patterns. Let yourself be inspired by the art of crochet - we are sure you will find one or two interesting projects for you.

Granny square cushion cover made from Cotton Quick Batik

The Granny Square pattern really comes into its own on our cushion cover . This beautiful, harmonious colour gradient - which, by the way, comes straight from the ball and does not require constant colour changes or knotting - makes this crochet technique shine. We think it is the perfect starter project for Granny Squares, because unlike typical grannies, this cover is made from one large square rather than many individual squares. Try it out for yourself and give your home a fresh new touch.

All you need is a crochet hook, a few buttons and your favourite colourway of our Cotton Quick Batik yarn. It is available in eight radiant colour variations and will surely impress you in more ways than one. Thanks to the refined finishing process of mercerising, gassing and combing, the pure cotton yarn has a glossy, silky appearance that remains even after washing.

Crochet a granny square poncho

We love the boho style! It is especially lovely to wear on hot summer days. Proof of that is our airy crochet poncho in Granny Square style. Unlike our Granny Square cushion, our handmade poncho is one of the typical Granny Square projects because it is assembled from several small squares. This fashionable piece in trendy natural tones will definitely bring lightness into your everyday life. And make everyone around you a little jealous. After all, who would not want to own this airy fashion accessory?!

Bag made from granny squares

Yippie! Colour makes you happy! We are completely smitten with this crocheted tote bag in Granny Square style, because it gives us a little colour and positivity even on the gloomiest day. Made from many small squares, this colourful bag with handles is a real eye-catcher. The best part: our Cotton Fun yarn, which we used to crochet this accessory, comes in many different colours. So you decide what your Granny Square shopping bag should look like. To give you a little inspiration: we could imagine choosing colours within one colour family. This crochet project would also look lovely in soft nude tones. Fact is: with our free crochet pattern for this bag, you can create your very own individual piece. Wonderful.

Shopping bag made from granny squares

You can never have enough shopping bags. That is why we developed this new design. And we can tell you: crocheting in Granny Square style not only produces a fantastic result, it is also wonderfully meditative. Double crochet stitches are worked from the inside out to create one large rectangle. Unlike the familiar Granny Squares, no individual squares are sewn together here; instead, as with our cushion cover, one large surface is created. In this case, not a square but a rectangular surface.

What remains the same compared with typical grannies: you can put your colours together yourself and create your own personal Granny Square. Our cotton yarn Cotton Fun comes in many different colours - which ones will you choose?

Our conclusion on crocheted granny squares

We think the idea of Granny Squares is fantastic. The principle that many small shapes can become something big shows that anything is possible in the diverse world of handicrafts. Whether beginner or pro - this technique gives all of us a wonderful way into the world of crochet. We can tell you one thing: once you start, you will surely be drawn straight into the Granny Square spell. Have fun on your creative journey to your colourful projects.
