Knitting with your left hand! How Sandra from @sandras.lieblingszeug teaches left-handed people to knit.

As an enthusiastic sock knitter, I collaborated with Gründl to create a sock pattern for socks with lace stripes.
Knitting with your left hand! How Sandra from @sandras.lieblingszeug teaches left-handed people to knit.

Every year we design the green women's power sock, and this year Claudia from the knitting design team came up with an exciting pattern that is also a lot of fun to knit.

On Instagram you are known as @sandras.lieblingszeug. What can your followers expect from your account, what is it about?

On my feed @sandras.lieblingszeug you can see my current knitting projects. In between, there are simple free knitting patterns or short video tips. In my Stories, you can sometimes take a look behind the scenes. My followers can vote on which colour combinations or patterns I should use for my next project, and I also show what else I get up to when I am not knitting.

Tell us a little about yourself: who is behind @sandras.lieblingszeug?

My name really is Sandra, and I am a total perfectionist who sometimes thinks about things for too long. But when I do something, I do it 100 percent. I recharge my batteries by knitting at home on the sofa with my two cats and a good series. I also love being out in nature and still want to see so much of the world. As a scanner type, I can get excited about many things and would love to try everything at least once. So I have already sewn, crocheted, painted, crafted with different materials and built my own furniture. I always come up with something new.

In 2021, you planned to knit three pairs of socks per month. Have you managed it so far, and how has it gone?

At first I managed to keep it up quite well, but then summer came :D So I took a short break. In August/September I was able to catch up again, so I am now up to date. Now, during Socktober, I have even knitted more than three pairs of socks.

Can you estimate how many socks you have knitted in your life?

At first I did not like knitting socks at all, until I discovered the Fair Isle technique and absolutely wanted to learn it. After that, a handful of socks came into being. I also once knitted lots of little baby socks for an Advent calendar. Quite a lot adds up once you start thinking about it. I think it will soon be in the triple digits.

Have you also set yourself a challenge for 2022?

I started the challenge to reduce all the sock yarn I already had. I had far too much of it, who doesn't know that ;) and it would be a shame for such beautiful wool to just sit in the cupboard. Since it is far from used up, I will continue with socks next year.

What else do you like knitting besides socks?

Sweaters :)

How did you get into knitting?

My first attempts to learn it in primary school were hopeless. Back then, my teacher did not have the time or patience to show me, as a left-handed person, in a way I could understand. Later, as a teenager, I wanted to try again and asked my grandma. She showed me very slowly, over and over again, and after a weekend with her I could already knit my first patterns with knit and purl stitches. I taught myself the rest with YouTube videos.

You give tutorials for left-handed knitting. Can you tell us more about that?

I am a very visual person, and it is much easier for me to learn something when I can see what I am supposed to do. I always have to watch videos made for right-handed people several times until I have figured out the right movements for myself. But once you understand what you need to do differently as a left-handed knitter, you can knit anything. With my tutorials, I want to help other left-handed people learn to knit and also knit more difficult patterns.

How do you approach creating your patterns, and where do you get your inspiration?

Actually, I usually just try things out :D It is always very spontaneous, for example when I see a pattern online or in books. Or different patterns that I then combine with each other. But there is always the idea first, then the knitting, and afterwards the instructions are written.

Do you have a favourite knitting saying?

Wool is about wanting, not needing :)

Your ultimate knitting tip:

For me, short circular needles were a game changer. I never really got on well with double-pointed needles before, and it felt like it took forever to knit a pair of socks with them. With very short circular needles, that was no problem, and it is soooo much faster. By the way, they are also great for knitting sweater sleeves.
Otherwise, I am a fan of the Norwegian cast-on, which is more elastic than the classic long-tail cast-on.

Your feedback on Hot Socks Verona

In terms of quality, it is a classic sock yarn that is very easy to knit with and comfortable to wear. I like the broad colour stripes that appear while knitting, and also the different colourways.
