What does it mean to knit in the round?

Knitting in the round means that you only knit right-side rows. The piece is not turned – there are no wrong-side rows.

Another advantage of knitting in the round is that the knitted piece does not need to be sewn together afterward. It creates a knitted tube.

What do you need to knit in the round?

If you want to knit in the round, you will need either a set of 5 double-pointed needles or circular knitting needles.

The circumference of your knitted piece determines which needles you should use. For smaller circumferences, double-pointed needles are excellent – larger circumferences should be knitted with circular needles.

When do you knit in the round?

Accessories such as hats, socks, cuffs, or gloves are often knitted in the round. But sleeves for pullovers, cardigans, or the body of a pullover are also often knitted in the round.

In principle, knitting in the round is popular for all projects that have a cylindrical basic shape.

How do I knit stockinette stitch in the round?

Knitting stockinette stitch in the round means that only knit stitches are worked without turning the piece or changing the type of stitch.

Knitting stockinette stitch in the round is therefore easier compared to knitting stockinette stitch in rows. Because if you want to knit stockinette stitch in rows, you have to knit only knit stitches on the right side – the wrong side, however, consists of purl stitches – the classic reverse stockinette stitch pattern.

Our Gründl Tip:

For better orientation, we recommend marking the beginning of the round with a stitch marker. This way, you can count the rounds more easily. Especially if you are following a pattern, this small helper will make knitting easier for you.

If you want to knit with double-pointed needles, we recommend placing the beginning of the round at the start of a needle and placing a stitch marker there.

How do I count rows when knitting stockinette stitch in the round?

As with knitting stockinette stitch in rows, you can also count rows when knitting stockinette stitch in the round by using the "V's" on the front side or the half-circles on the back side as a guide.

If you want to count the stitches on the front side, one "V" represents one row.

If you prefer to count the stitches on the back, choose either the upward- or downward-facing half-circles.
