After successfully casting on stitches and knitting the first knit stitches together, we are now close to the end of the first row. What's next? In this video, we'll show you how to change rows when knitting and how to knit simple selvedge stitches.

What is a selvedge stitch?

A selvedge stitch refers to both the first and the last stitch of a row.

Why are selvedge stitches important?

The effect of selvedge stitches should not be underestimated. They influence both the appearance and the functionality of the resulting edges.

What types of selvedge stitches are there? And which selvedge stitch for what?

Depending on the pattern and project you are knitting, different selvedge stitches may be more or less suitable. The type of selvedge stitch to use is stated in your project's knitting pattern. Should the selvedge stitch have a decorative character? Look the same on the front and back? Be stable? Become elastic? These questions, among others, are a good starting point to find out which selvedge stitch should be used. Of course, it's also a matter of taste which selvedge stitch you use for your creative project.

This selvedge stitch creates a very stable, firm edge. This frequently used type of selvedge stitch is - as in our case - very well suited for projects knitted in garter stitch. The garter stitch selvedge is also often knitted for edges that will later be sewn together.

This edge is very suitable for patterns that contract in height, as well as for open edges, as it looks very neat. It can be worked over one, two or, if necessary, more stitches.

An artful cord forms here along the edge - for scarves and shawls as well as for other open edges such as those of cardigans.

Similar to the knitted cord selvedge, a simple chain of stitches is created here, running at the edge, slanted to the sides. An edge that looks very neat and elegant. It is particularly suitable for shawls and scarves.

How does the garter stitch selvedge work?

To knit garter stitch selvedge stitches, proceed as follows: Knit the last stitch in each row as usual. Then turn your work so that you can continue knitting on the return row. Now bring the yarn behind your project and into the yarn hold, which we explained in one of the previous videos. Now you are holding the empty needle in your right hand again.
The first stitch of the new row on the left needle is now transferred to the right needle as if knitting. However, it is NOT knitted, but merely slipped knitwise. Then knit stitches follow as usual.
