Casting on stitches

Here we go! Now we finally start with our scarf. More precisely, we're casting on stitches. We'll show you how to make a slip knot, how to hold the yarn correctly, and how to cast on stitches for your scarf. Have fun.
All you need are knitting needles and yarn. First, we pull the yarn from the skein. But how do you unwind the yarn from the ball? There are two ways to get to the beginning of the yarn.

Option 1: from the outside

To access the yarn from the outside of the ball, remove the label. The advantage here is that the beginning of the yarn is usually easy to find, as it lies loosely on the ball. The disadvantage of this method is that the ball moves and rolls wildly as the yarn is unwound.

Option 2: from the inside

To pull the yarn from the inside of the ball, proceed as follows:

How does the slip knot work?

To form a slip knot, we wrap the yarn around the index and middle finger of our left hand from top to bottom and feed it through the loop from behind. Similar to a knot. However, the yarn is not pulled all the way through, but tightened at both ends so that a loop is formed.

Then you insert the needle from right to left into the thread that is around your index finger and also bring it onto your needle.

Now both threads cross on your needle.

Now release the thread that was wrapped around your thumb and tighten the loop on your needle.

The result: A beautiful and even edge is formed. On one side, the tightened yarn forms a horizontal line – on the other side, small knots have formed.

How to tighten the stitch – Tips and Tricks

You can tighten a stitch by pulling on the thread leading to the loose end. Gründl tip: Hold the stitches on your needle lightly with your right index finger to maintain tension.

How can thread tension be regulated? What is the perfect thread tension?

The stitches on your needle should not be too loose, but also not too tight. They should still be able to slide easily, but not be so loose that they fall off. An indication that your stitches are too tight is if they squeak when you try to slide them.

For our scarf, we need 32 stitches plus 2 edge stitches according to the instructions. In this case, our edge stitches are cast on just like normal stitches. So, once you have cast on a total of 34 stitches, you've made it! You have successfully mastered the chapter on casting on stitches. Yippee!
