Find out why a gauge swatch is so important, how to make one, and what tips we recommend below.
Why are gauge swatches important?
To understand how stitches behave and how you personally knit, a gauge swatch should be made before every project. A specified gauge swatch can be found in every pattern. This pattern is designed so that the measurements of the knitted piece are achieved with the included gauge swatch.
The goal is for your gauge swatch to match the gauge swatch in the pattern.
What happens if the gauge swatch is incorrect?
If your gauge swatch does not match the specifications in your pattern, your knitted piece will deviate from the desired end result. You will therefore not end up with the exact result with the specified measurements from the pattern. So, if you knit too tightly or too loosely, your project will be smaller or larger.
Furthermore, it would mean that the material consumption does not match the pattern's specifications. If you knit too tightly, you will have leftover material – if you knit too loosely, your material will not be enough.
