How to read a knitting pattern?

Before you can start your knitting project, it's important to read through the entire knitting pattern carefully and in detail.
Why is it valuable to read a knitting pattern? And how do you read a knitting pattern at all? The purpose of knitting patterns is to identify and understand all the information needed to realize the desired project.

 
A knitting pattern not only contains information about the yarns used, including material composition, but also specifies the consumption of individual materials and the required needle size.

 
The small yarn ball icons also indicate the difficulty level of the respective knitted piece. One yarn ball means "easy", if three yarn balls are visible, the knitting project is more suitable for advanced knitters or professionals.

 
On the knitting pattern, you will also find an overview of the one or even several knitting patterns in which your project will be knitted. A distinction is usually made here between the main pattern for full-surface areas and patterns for cuffs or the edge of your knitted piece. In our case, the scarf is knitted in garter stitch with selvedge stitches.

 
Every Gründl pattern also shows you what a swatch of the respective project should look like. We explain why a swatch is important and how to make one here.

 
The size that your knitting project will reach is also indicated in the pattern. In our case, we see here that the scarf – measured without fringes – will be approx. 208 cm long and approx. 28 cm wide.

 
After the general information, the knitting pattern can begin. In this case, we designed the pattern for your scarf without abbreviations to simplify reading the individual steps, especially for beginners. Another special feature is that a detailed illustration on the back clearly shows the order and after how many centimeters each color is to be knitted. Perfect for starting your perhaps even first knitted piece step by step and knitting a scarf together with the Gründl Knitting School. More demanding knitting projects often include a knitting chart to better understand the detailed pattern. We will show you how to read a knitting chart in a later video.
